Transport nitrogen safely: What you should bear in mind

The international agreement ADR ("Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road") regulates the transportation of dangerous goods on public roads. Whether for industrial plants, biobanks or laboratories: both tanks for liquid nitrogen and cylinders for cryogenic gas must comply with these regulations during transportation. There is an exemption limit of up to 1000 points for this substance, below which transportation is permitted under less stringent conditions. One point stands for 1 liter of compressed gas or 1 kg of liquefied gas. The following safety measures apply to the transportation of nitrogen according to ADR:

A complete transport document must be carried for every transport of dangerous goods requiring a permit. The transport document includes the following information, among others:

• UN number
• Official naming
• Hazard label numbers
• If applicable: Packaging group
• Tunnel restriction code
• Quantity & packages
• Recipient and sender
• Special information, if applicable

The hazardous goods vehicle must be equipped in accordance with ADR specifications (e.g. wheel chocks, warning triangles, fire extinguishers, personal protective equipment). The liquid nitrogen must be stored in a suitable transport container - certified and regularly inspected. Sufficient training for transport officers is verified by the dangerous goods driver's license, the "ADR Card". The truck or trailer transporting hazardous goods must be clearly marked with hazard labels and an orange hazard plate. Liquid nitrogen must be transported in ventilated vehicles (trucks, trailers or vans).

Personal protective equipment is mandatory for all vehicle occupants:

• Eye protection (e.g. safety goggles, face protection)
• Protective gloves (dry, suitable for cryogenic temperatures)
• Clothing that covers the whole body
• Safety shoes
• Portable lighting device
• Safety vest

In addition to the ADR, there are guidelines for the transportation of dangerous goods by other means: the RID for rail transport, the IATA DGR for shipping by air, the IMDG Code for shipping by sea and the ADN for inland waterways.
